The Hedge
Week 6, Term 3 | Thursday 29 August 2024 A weekly snippet of what’s happening ‘behind the hedge’ at Mercedes College...

"This is Intercol"

At the end of six days of competition, Mercedes College came away with the 2024 Intercol win – 11 shields to 10 – but it was the camaraderie and community spirit on display that sums up exactly why Intercol is such a highlight on the College calendar.

Our Mercy keys were clearly shown in the actions of our participants and our supporters, with friends, families, staff, Old Scholars, and many future Intercol stars turning out in force to wave the Camel flag and cheer for Mercedes College.

Thank you to everyone who had a hand in this fantastic week, and we look forward to defending our title when St Ignatius' College hosts us for Intercol 2025.

Book Week Magic

Reading truly is magic, and so were the costumes of our young students as they celebrated stories, characters, and far off places at the 2024 Book Week Parade!

Of course, underneath the facepaint, glitter, and tissue paper, our students know that the true message of Book Week is the chance to dream, celebrate, and understand ourselves and each other through the gift of reading.

Student Free Day | Friday 6 September (OSHC available)

Mercy Award nominations close | Tuesday 10 September

Mercy Day Mass, early dismissal | Friday 27 September

Orientation Day | Friday 29 November

Surfing Waves of Colour

It was a colourful affair in SACE Physics recently when students experimented with Carbonate solids and Hydrochloric Acid under a flame to create different wavelengths of light.

Students used a spectroscope to see the wavelengths correctly, but we think it’s a pretty experiment even without the extra equipment!

State Soccer Stars

Congratulations to five Mercedes College students who were selected to represent the City South district at the recent SAPSASA State Soccer Carnival!

Saul (Year 5, Dalton), Samuel (Year 6, Fitzpatrick), Paul (Year 6, McAuley), Maya (Year 6, Fitzpatrick), and Imogen (Year 6, McAuley) played extremely well in the three-day carnival, helping lead their teams to third (City South Boys), and first place (City South Girls)!

First Holy Communion

Congratulations to Year 4 students Ana (Dalton), Aria (McAuley), and Alina (Fitzpatrick), Zyla (Dalton), Nicole (Fitzpatrick), William (Dalton) and Malaika (Dalton) who have now completed their Sacraments and celebrated their First Holy Communion over the weekend.

Our proud students celebrated this occasion with Deacon Phi and Fr Tony at the St Paul of the Cross Parish.

Oliphant Award Success

In first year participating in the Oliphant Science Awards, we are thrilled to celebrate the achievement of Year 7 student, Kirra (McAuley), whose outstanding Scientific Inquiry entry won an award, and put her in the running for a prestigious Gold Sponsorship Award, which will presented at a ceremony in October.

Kirra’s project looked at the potential of honey as a natural antiseptic, and compared the antimicrobial properties of Manuka, wildflower, and clover honey in her research.

Congratulations, Kirra, and we look forward to celebrating your continued success in Science!

Celebrating Father's Day

It was a chilly morning, but a very warm atmosphere at today's Father's Day Breakfast, with more than 120 dads and their children coming together at the Mercedes College Cafe.

Our Coffee cart was kept busy and everyone enjoyed a hot breakfast of egg and bacon muffins, cheesy croissants, and yummy banana bread while catching up and sharing their plans for the weekend.

We wish all of our Mercedes College dads, grand dads and father figures a wonderful Father's Day on Sunday!
