Celebrating our Mums

Last Friday, nearly 200 mums enjoyed a lovely lunch at Carrick Hill, as part of the lead in celebrations for Mother’s Day on Sunday.

Hosted by our Acting Principal, Narelle Sandercock, our mums enjoyed lunch with a view, delicious food and plenty of good conversation.

A special thank you to our many families who donated items for our raffle:
Aspa Callisto, Danielle Comer, Rhi Clohesy, Kelliann Yates, Davina Cuevas, Dianna Themistocleous, Natalie Mills, Bec Malcolm and the Capobianco family.

Primary Knockout Netball

Last week, ten of our Year 5/6 Netballers represented Mercedes College at the first round of Knock-Out, a great opportunity to refine their skills and be seen by SAPSASA Selectors.

After playing last year’s winner, Fulham North, as well as St Francis De Sales, Westbourne Park Primary and Goodwood Primary, our girls came away with two wins and two losses.

A great start to the Winter Netball season.

Versions is exploring how artists transform ideas, stories and themes into their own unique expression. Our Year 8 and Year 9 Performing Arts students will share their interpretations across music, drama and movement – showcasing how they have reimagined the same source material, often in completely different ways. This is a great opportunity for our students to step into the role of ’emerging artist’ and a wonderful chance for our community to experience the diversity and imagination in our Performing Arts program.

An Historical Adventure

Yesterday, our Year 5 students took a step back in time to explore the pioneering history of the Hills town of Hahndorf.

With the help of local guides, students toured the Main Street with the Hahndorf Academy, visited the Schmidt-Rodert Farmlet and stopped by the Hahndorf Memorial Garden.

Students were able to connect their classroom learning with real world examples of early Pioneer lifestyles and roles – and Autumn is always the most beautiful time of the year to visit this part of the Adelaide Hills.

Mountain Bike Success

There were chilly morning starts for our Year 5 to Year 8 students who took part in the Mountain Biking Teams Championships last week.

With record participation over two days, Mercedes College was represented by 30 students in six teams who demonstrated great enthusiasm, determination and sportsmanship, even supporting students from other schools when they took a tumble on the track.

Special congratulations to Louis (Year 8, Fitzpatrick) and Charlotte (Year 8, Dalton), who achieved first place on the podium for the Mixed Year 7/8 Teams category – a fantastic result!

Reminder: Raising Resilient Children

As part of our Guest Speaker programme, renowned presenter and founder of Positive Minds Australia, Madhavi Nawana Parker, will be sharing ideas, strategies and insights about building resilience, positive discipline and emotional regulation in children.

We’d love you to come along and see this important presentation.

Talking With the Animals

This week, our Year 7 students had a visit from the Nature Education Centre and a range of furry, slithery and scaled creatures.

This hands-on experience is part of their Unit of Inquiry on Introduced Species – what are the implications and how do we classify living and nonliving things.

Students loved the opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the animals and enjoyed the chance to ask questions from the experts, to take back to their classroom learning.

Imagine if we could talk to the animals…

Staying Connected

Recently, our Year 7 Year Level Representatives organised a Sunday afternoon catch up for families at the Bath Hotel in Norwood. There was a great turn out and it was a wonderful chance to meet and welcome new Year 7 families to the College.

Our Reps are a great conduit and connector for their Year Level and they play an important role in our community.

Year Level events can be as simple as a coffee catch up after drop off, a weekend meal in a local pub or a meet up in a playground for an hour or so. It’s all about connection and bringing families together!

A Touching Tribute from our First XVIII

It was a jubilant Mother’s Day for our footy mums, as they cheered our Boys’ First XVIII to their second victory of the year, and very first ever over Immanuel College on Sunday.

As part of their celebrations, players and coaching staff took time to publicly thank each of the mums for their years of support, encouragement, time volunteering and looking out for the team.

It was a touching tribute topped only by the win!
