At Mercedes, we believe you don’t need a badge or a title to be a leader. All students have the opportunity to build on their personal leadership skills by nominating to be part of our formal Student Leadership structure.

We are committed to developing confident, capable students of character… to be leaders, for life.

Our Student Leadership Programme offers positions of responsibility, throughout the Junior, Middle and Senior shools.

We look to encourage student leaders to demonstrate vision, reliability, commitment, and compassion, to help them grow their capacity to take on responsibilities in addition to their academic and co-curricular learning.

Students nominate for available roles, sharing their reasons for seeking a formal position, and the student body and its faculty choose the students they wish to lead them.

Leadership Roles

There are roles for students at all levels of our College:

Four College Captains are selected from our Year 12 cohort to be the leading representatives of the College student body.

Senior School

They sit on the Senior School Student Representative Committee (SRC) with students from Years 10 and 11.

The College Captains are supported by a number of Year 12 Portfolio Leaders, who champion specific areas of College life:

  • Sport
  • The Arts
  • International Student Programme
  • House Leaders (x 4 Houses)
  • Social Justice
  • Student Mentor Programme
Middle School

The Middle School is led by four Year 9 Captains, who sit on the Middle School SRC along with representatives from Year 6 to Year 8.

Junior School

The Junior School is led by four Captains, selected from the Year 5 cohort, who are supported by two Junior School French Leaders.

Students from Reception to Year 4 join them on the Junior School SRC.

House Leaders

Our House system is an important part of student life at Mercedes College.

All three sub-schools are represented by House Leaders, whose role is to cultivate House spirit and strengthen vertical connections between students.

We have four Houses – Barry (Yellow), Dalton (Red), Fitzpatrick (Blue) and McAuley (Green).

Each House has 2 leaders from Year 5, Year 9 and Year 12.

They coordinate House activities each Term to earn points for the House Shield.

House activities include:

Term 1 – Sport

Term 2 – The Arts

Term 3 – Academia

Term 4 – Social Justice
