Return to on-site learning and the "new normal"

With over 90% of students back at school at the start of Term 2, the College is now taking steps to return to what will be the “new normal”.

It has been particularly uplifting to see students re-engaging with their learning and reconnecting with staff and friends. It has also highlighted the importance of making the transition back to face-to-face learning as soon as possible in Term 2.

With this in mind the prime mode of teaching and learning at Mercedes College will officially return to being ‘on-site’ from Monday 11 May. However, unless there are particular vulnerabilities in students and/or families, students are expected back at school as of Tuesday 5 May.

It is likely the shift in focus will not significantly impact on most families. However, we have a firm plan that also includes how quality education will be provided to those families who need to keep their children at home. Those who have particular concerns relating to their child’s context are encouraged to make contact with the College via the Home Group Teacher and Year Level Coordinator to discuss how we can continue to support their learning and well-being.

Pick Up and Drop Off

Based on the current COVID-19 advice, parents and caregivers are to be advised that they are not permitted to exit their vehicles when dropping off or collecting their children.

Designated drop-off and collection points, and the attendance of extra staff members, have been arranged for younger students and students with disability. Older students may accompany younger siblings to their designated collection and drop-off points. We ask that you please drop off / pick up your children at the following points:

  • R-2: Delamere Avenue Kiss-and-Drop
  • Years 3-5: Outside northern side of the College gates (Delamere Avenue)
  • Years 6-12: Outside southern side of the College gates (Fullarton Road and Rectory Walk)

If driving: Please stay in your car.

If walking: Please drop off / pick up your child or children at the school gates (or at Kiss & Drop for R-2 students).

Our staff will be ready at the gates to greet students and to ensure that they transit to their classrooms safely.

Uniform

The College Shop and Second Hand Uniform Shop have both reopened with reduced hours (see below). However, due to the closures at the end of last term and the limited trading hours, we recognise it may take some time to purchase winter requirements.

We are therefore providing students with a moratorium from full winter uniform expectations until parents/caregivers are able to purchase winter uniform items. Students may wear their PE or summer uniform during this period if they do not have a winter uniform.

If you already have a winter uniform, or once you have had an appointment at the College Shop, students are required to attend school following the usual winter uniform requirements

Classroom Activities

  • All classroom lessons and activities, including excursions essential to the curriculum like Outdoor Education, will continue with modifications to reduce the risk of transmission as per the SA Health guidelines.
  • All large gatherings, including assemblies and Masses, will be restructured into smaller class sizes.

Sport

  • All extra-curricular sport remains suspended at the start of Term 2. We will update you when this changes.
  • All carnivals and knockout competitions remain postponed or cancelled

Music and Drama

  • Music rehearsals and instrumental lessons will continue with modifications to reduce the risk of transmission as per the SA Health guidelines.
  • Concerts and performances remain postponed or cancelled. We will update you when this changes.
