Journeying together with Mutual Respect

By Deborah Lubatti

A new year, with a new Mercy Key to explore.

A warm welcome to all in our Mercedes College community.

Our college has a deep and rich history that celebrates its Catholic identity and strong Mercy history.

The Mercy story was initiated by Dublin-born Catherine McAuley. She dedicated her life to caring for the poor, particularly women, and for this reason opened the House of Mercy in 1827 before creating the Order of The Sisters of Mercy in 1831.

the Mercy Sisters established Mercedes College in 1954, and we're all indebted to their vision.

Poem The Door of Mercy, by Mary Wickham RSM, begins by reminding us that:

The Door of Mercy is double-hinged,
swinging in, opening out,
sturdy, yet easily moved...

This poem provides us with beautiful imagery around the focus of our College Mercy Key for 2023: Mutual Respect.

We demonstrate Mutual Respect when we acknowledge the dignity of others by treating them as we would have them treat us, by listening to them, having a growth mind set in our actions and thinking, and considering different perspectives.

As we begin this academic year, I invite you to consider how you might celebrate and embrace the Mercy Key of Mutual Respect.

Many blessings.
