The Hedge
Week 9, Term 1 | Thursday 27 March 2025 A weekly snippet of what’s happening ‘behind the hedge’ at Mercedes College...

Reaching Great Heights

Our Year 3 students recently showed their determination, resilience, and a good dose of grit, on a climb to the Brown Hill lookout, located in the nearby Waite Conservation Reserve.

A round trip of five kilometres, with a steep climb to get to the top, our students showed great teamwork and supported each other along the way.

And the reward? The spectacular city views over the city and a chance to take a breath!

Fitzpatrick makes a Splash!

It was a close-fought competition at the Junior School Swimming Carnival last week, with our students spending the day at the Unley Swimming Pool, taking part in races in and out of the pool.

Fitzpatrick took home a narrow win over McAuley, followed by Dalton and then Barry. House spirit was counted towards the final points tally!

The battle in the pool isn’t over yet, though, with our Middle and Senior School students ready to don their House colours for their Swimming Carnival tomorrow at the SA Aquatic Centre. Families can review the schedule of the day here.

Will Fitzpatrick remain on top? Or will another House take the honours in our last College-wide sporting carnivals for the year...

Finding the Rhythm

Earlier this week, our Junior School Marquee became a lunchtime learning centre for all things music. Students came along to try their hand at playing music on a range of instruments, as well as singing, with guidance from peers, our Arts Leaders, staff and Music teachers.

It was great to hear a cocophany of sounds eminating from the heart of the Junior School, and to see colourful artwork inspired by the music from our youngest leaners!

Families of students who came along and showed interest in particuolar instrumets will be contacted by our Music team to have a chat about becoming involved in our Music Programme, or having private lessons with our range of tutors.

You can also hop on our website and read about our Private Instrumental Tuition opportunities here.

Top College Athletes

This week Mercedes College hosted the 2025 Catholic Co-Education Athletics Carnival. More than 120 students attended with our Sport and PE Teams and had a great day on the track.

Our students showed wonderful enthusiasm and commitment, which delivered strong results for the College and highlighted our long and proud history as a highly competitive athletics College.

We competed in the Pool A Division across five age categories, and were up against tough competition. However we performed to an outstanding level, placing in four of our five categories - a brilliant result!

Under 20s - First Place
Under 16s - First Place
Under 15s - Second Place
Under 13s - Third Place
Under 14s - just missed the podium at Fourth Place.

Well done to all of our athletes wearing 42 for being fantastic ambassadors for Mercedes College.

Old Scholar Takes Top Art Prize

More than 130 Class of 2024 students from across the state were selected to have their works exhibited at this year’s prestigious SACE Art Show.

Two Mercedes College graduates, Laura Seach and Noah Hannon, had their works included and this week the nine awards associated with the event were announced.

Laura’s piece, “Strangers in Nature” took out the Adelaide Central School of Art SACE Art Award – congratulations!

Not surprisingly, “Strangers in Nature” was also the recipient of the Principal’s Art Award at last year’s College exhibition.

The SACE Art Show is available to visit until Thursday 10 April. More details here.

Autumn Holidays a Snap

Our autumn Vacation Care programme is now open for bookings, with some favourites and new offerings for students aged from Reception to Year 7.

This service will be closed on the public holidays marking the Easter long weekend and Anzac Day, but will be available on Monday 28 April's Pupil Free Day ahead of the start of Term 2 on Tuesday 29 April.

See the full programme here and complete your booking form today.

Inspiring and Insightful Speakers

For their first Religious Education Seminar Day of 2025, our Year 12 students heard from guest speakers from our extended community.

Senior South Australian of the Year 2024 and Sister of Mercy, Sr Meredith Evans, Young Mercy Links SA Coordinator, Gaby Kinsman, and Rebuilding Schools Ukraine Founder, Diane Howarth, provided insights into global human suffering, like limits accessing education, human trafficking and enslaved labour, and environmental degradation, as well as other world views and spiritual perspectives.

Student leaders shared lunch with our guest speakers and got the chance to speak further about global issues.

Discover our Performing Arts

Next Monday 31 March, families are invited to experience the range of Performing Arts available to students as part of our Curriculum Extension Activities (CEAs)

The College witl host a one-hour Showcase featuring ensembles, bands, and dancers.

Our students will share what the Arts mean to them as part of their Mercedes College education, and our new Director of Performing Arts, Jayan Mace, and the wider Performing Arts Team will introduce themselves and share their visions for 2025.

This is a great opportunity to get an understanding of our different performance disciplines and learn more about this important aspect of College life.

Student Representatives Ready

Student leadership and agency is an important element of a Mercedes College education.

We have Student Representative Committees (SRCs) for all three Schools, with members from each year level nominated by their peers.

Students from Reception right through to the Senior School, are given the opportunity to participate, and be the voice of their fellow students in all areas of College life.

These are great platforms for building confidence, teamwork, and leadership skills that will complement their daily learning.
