The Hedge
Week 2, Term 1 | Thursday 6 February 2025 A weekly snippet of what’s happening ‘behind the hedge’ at Mercedes College...

Celebrating Leadership

This morning our College community came together for our first R-12 gathering, a Welcome Liturgy and Student Leadership Ceremony.

Enduring themes throughout the morning were  compassion and leadership, and how everyone can lead with their unique gifts and talents. After our Liturgy, Principal Andrew Balkwill and our three Heads of School presented leadership badges, blessed by Father John, to our Junior, Middle, and Senior School Captains, House Leaders, and Portfolio Leaders.

Leaders pledged to uphold the values of our Mercy Keys, committing to continue the valued tradition of service leadership at Mercedes College. Congratulations, Leaders!

Safety First

This week, our Year 6 students started their role as Crossing Monitors on Delamere Avenue. With training conducted by a member of the South Australian Police Force in Week 1, these students will take responsibility of helping our families to safely cross the street, before and after school for the school year. '

Make sure you give them a big thank you when you see them in action!

Globally Outstanding

This week, Mercedes College hosted the International Baccalaureate (IB) Awards at the Adelaide Town Hall, where the Honourable Blair Boyer MP, Minister for Education, Training and Skills, presented Merits and Distinctions to IB students from ten schools from around the State.

Mercedes College Old Scholar and former College Captain Holly Cooke (Class of 2018, Fitzpatrick), gave the Diana Medlin Lecture, sharing with award recipients how the IB shaped her love of learning, gave her the skills to follow her career aspirations to become a scientist and always encouraged her to ask questions. You can catch some of her enthusiasm through her podcast Wonder, which shares stories that connect people to nature through science.

It was a wonderful celebration of some of the State's highest achievers and brightest young minds and it was a pleasure to host the event.

Change a Life

Mercedes College has a strong history of supporting students from Reception right through to Year 12 through our Student Mentoring Programme (SMP).

Designed to help students with their self-esteem, confidence, and overall wellbeing, the SMP builds positive one-on-one relationships between students and volunteer mentors. The connections made between mentors and students have wellbeing benefits that flow both ways, meaning that you might change more than a student’s life; you might change yours.

Register your interest to become a Community Mentor in 2025, or join our Welcome Morning Tea to hear more about this fantastic programme.

Everyone Loves a Garden Party...

One of our most anticipated events is our annual whole-of-community gathering, which is held in the first few weeks of Term 1.

This is a great way to bring everyone together, especially our new Mercedes College families. It's also a great chance for current families to reconnect after the long festive break.

This year, we are holding a Garden Party in the Rose Garden... And who doesn't love a Garden Party?!

We are bringing in the Big Red SOONTA Van to serve fresh, delicious food, with special children's meals available, plus some 'sides' for those who just want a snack.

We also have Small Gully Wines running the bar, thanks to the Black family from our College community.

Of course, there will be gelato, music, and some fun for the young and young at heart!

We'd love to see you all there – it's open to all R-12 families and friends and our staff.

Let's make our first Garden Party, the best one yet!

Book your tickets here – so we can prepare your meals on the day.

See you there!
